1. Spanish works in a different way when we talk about "present progressive". The main difference is regarding "present continuous" indicating future. For example:
We are playing football this afternoon
Nosotros jugamos al fútbol esta tarde
In Spanish, the structure "estar + gerund" is avoided in this situation. We never use gerund when referring to a close future action.
2. When we talk about an action which is happening right now, Spanish and English work in the same way. Let's analyse these two examples:
I am writing a letter right now
Yo estoy escribiendo una carta ahora mismo.
